Uloop Morning Scoop: Vegas Victim Stories, Russia, Facebook and the 9 Highest Paying College Majors

By Uloop Staff on October 4, 2017

Hi Wednesday, let’s hope you are better than Monday and Tuesday. Get off to an informed start with the Uloop Morning Scoop for October 4:

Heartbreaking stories of Vegas shooting victims emerge

In the wake of the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history, families, friends and those who survived are telling the stories of loved ones lost. Heartbreaking doesn’t seem like a strong enough word to describe them.

The New York Times has compiled many of the stories.

President Trump is scheduled to visit Las Vegas today, a trip many hope goes better than his visit to Puerto Rico earlier this week.

Michigan and Wisconsin targeted in Russian-linked Facebook ads

Up to 10 million people may have seen ads purchased by Russian groups during the run-up to the 2016 election (Image: Facebook screenshot)

Facebook recently revealed that several thousand politically-themed ads were purchased by Russians to influence voters in the 2016 U.S. election. On Tuesday it was discovered that these ads specifically targeted certain groups including voters in swing states Michigan and Wisconsin.

CNN reports, “Some of the Russian ads appeared highly sophisticated in their targeting of key demographic groups in areas of the states that turned out to be pivotal, two of the sources said. The ads employed a series of divisive messages aimed at breaking through the clutter of campaign ads online, including promoting anti-Muslim messages, sources said.”

Until now it had been unclear exactly which regions of the country were targeted for these ads.

TODAY IN A TWEET

Finally some good news this week:

The 9 highest-paying college majors

Hmmm… so many to choose from (Image: Uloop News file photo)

Well, maybe we should say “lucrative,” since that’s the word CBS News uses in a story about the best-paying majors, using data from LinkedIn. Here’s how they frame it:

“Recent advice in landing a top-paying job has steered college students to so-called STEM degrees, or science, technology, engineering and math. But new research from career site LinkedIn finds that’s not always the right move. While many of the majors linked to top-paying jobs are in the STEM fields, a few standouts don’t require advanced math or science classes.”

Computer science topped the list, but we’ve gotta be a little skeptical about #2, which was visual artist.
