It’s about that time of the year when everyone’s leases are ending and they’re sick of their apartment complex, so everyone is moving. It can be so exciting to walk into a brand new apartment; a clean slate to decorate.

But sometimes it’s a bit lonely. Moving into a new place can be nerve wracking. Here are 13 ways to make any new apartment feel like home.

1. Deep clean

Before you get too excited about decorating the place, make sure you give it a good, deep clean. (This is a good time to call your mom and ask for help.)

You won’t feel good about your place if you just cover up the dust and dirt with cute placemats and rugs.

First and foremost, you’ll want to deep clean the entire place. It’ll give you a sense of ownership over your new digs.

2. Pay attention to lighting

Lamps are much more calming and homey than overhead lights. Pick up a few floor lamps and table lamps from Walmart. Soft lighting is relaxing and you’ll love coming home to some cute lamps.

3. Choose a signature scent

Candles. Candle warmers. Air freshener. Buy a signature scent and stick with it. You’ll enjoy coming home to a good smelling place, and smells will make it homey quicker than anything.

4. Rent furniture that is comfortable

Sure, good looking furniture is a plus in a new place. But you’re going to want furniture that you can really settle into. If you can’t get comfortable in your easy chair — don’t rent it! Focus on furniture that you’re going to want to unwind in.

5. Display sentimental items

You’ll want to walk in after a long day and see pictures of your family and friends. Being surrounded by memories will instantly make your apartment truly feel like your home.

6. Cook a good meal

A home cooked meal is a good way to settle into your new place. Cook your favorite meal and enjoy it at your dining room table. Have a glass of wine. Appreciate the work you’ve put in to get yourself a place and have it looking as spiffy as it does.

7. Set up the bathroom

The bathroom should be your place of rest and relaxation. Bubble baths. Candles. Set up your bathroom so you can climb into the tub and truly unwind.

You’re going to want your favorite shower curtain and your most comfy towels to wrap up in after a good bubble bath. Cleaning and setting up your bathroom is a sure fire way to make your new place feel like home.

8. Put on some music

Throw a little dance party. Have some fun. In order to feel comfortable in a new place, you’ve got to do what makes you feel comfortable. Most people enjoy listening to music — even if it’s just some soft jazz.

9. Go to the grocery store

Buy some milk and cereal. Stock up your pantry. It’s important to have all the comfort foods that you enjoy so you’ll feel good about waking up in the morning and toasting your favorite bagel.

10. Plan a housewarming party

Once you have things decently clean and decorated, invite some of your friends over! Throwing a little get together is one of the fastest ways to get acclimated to your new place and to make some memories that will last.

11. Introduce yourself to your neighbors

You never know when you’re going to need something … and your neighbors are the best people to help you out! Introduce yourself to the people who live around you and you’ll feel more comfortable about where you live.

12. Settle in your pets

My baby boy is the greatest thing about my apartment. When he’s comfortable, I’m comfortable. As long as he has his own little corner with his bed, toys, and water bowl, I feel settled. It’s important to me that both of us are comfortable in our new place. Setting up his little area makes it feel so homey. :)

13. Removable wallpaper

If you can’t paint, don’t worry! There are some alternatives to having plain walls. Hanging up decals that are removable, or using removable wallpaper will make your apartment feel like home in no time. One of my favorite decorations in my apartment is a wall decal from Target that says “Follow Your Own Path” and I’ve had it since I moved into the dorms. I get to move it around whenever I want since it’s removable and stays pretty sticky! I would highly recommend!

As you decide where to begin in your new place, follow these 13 tips to make it feel as homey as possible. A new place can definitely be overwhelming and intimidating. Remember that you only have to take it one step at a time and before you know it, you’ll be right at home in your new crib.
